Is the NFL to dangerous?

I can't stand seeing the NFL's premier players sidelined with serious injuries.

Last week Carson Palmer was quoted saying someone is going to die in the NFL. Micheal Oriard discusses death in football here, but less terminal injuries happen to players every game.

Considering week 1 in the new NFL season:

  • Donovan McNabb, quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles fractured his ribs
  • Troy Polamalu, defensive mega star of the Pittsburgh Steelers was struck down by the Madden Curse with a sprained knee
  • Brian Urlacher defensive captain of the Chicago Bears dislocated his wrist

Steelers games without Polamalu aren't the same. No one wants to see Kevin Kolb start for the Eagles this weekend except for his parents, maybe.

In week 1 of last year's NFL season Tom Brady, arguably the most popular player in the league was knocked out for the season with a knee injury. The Patriots managed to make the season interesting, but still games are better when the star players are actually playing in them.

So, can the league do anything to decrease the amount of injuries players are sustaining? Probably not. There are already rules in place to protect quarterbacks (many critics think the QBs are over-protected) but with every season welcoming players that are bigger stronger and faster then they were before the injury tolls will keep stacking up.
